Chris Garcia is a delight. Currently residing in Los Angeles where he and a handful of talented others put on an amazing little show called The Business, Chris came up in the San Francisco comedy scene under the careful tutelage of Harvey Milk. Who was there to recruit him. Or maybe it was Tim Lincecum, actually. Or Lawrence Ferlinghetti? I seem to recall something about a Coney Island of the Mind in Chris’ set? Anyway, drawing a blank. The point is it was in the City by the Bay that Chris really started honing his chops as a comic. And that city served him well. Because as I mentioned before, he’s a goddamn delight. A delight who is not afraid to delve into some serious subject matter and work through it on stage. It’s a skill that I admire and am trying to cultivate, as you’ll hear on this podcast. But it was so nice having Chris come stay with me for a few days, watching him rip up stages across the city of Denver, leaving all who he encountered utterly in awe of his talent while simultaneously beguiled by his Cuban charm. And as if that wasn’t enough, when asked off the cuff what one of his favorite music videos of all time is, he immediately responded, “What’s Up Fat Lip?” featuring Fat Lip from the Pharcyde and directed by Spike Jonze. I had never seen this video until Chris recommended it. And it’s great. Want proof? Here:
